The Tiny News Collective receives $2 million from Knight Foundation

The Tiny News Collective is happy to announce the collective will receive $2 million from the Knight Foundation to support expanding our model of serving new and early stage news publishers as they build and grow their organizations.

The Tiny News Collective’s mission is to make local news entrepreneurship more accessible, equitable and inclusive by welcoming and supporting founders from a much broader spectrum of identities and experiences than currently reflected in the media landscape.

“One of our biggest lessons from our work is that it is the journalism support organizations that must be the most flexible and adaptive rather than asking founders to fit into our programming,” said Heather Bryant, interim executive director. “This funding will allow us to build upon the lessons we’ve learned to ensure that we meet founders where they are and provide the support they need when and how they need it.”

The Tiny News Collective focuses on removing common obstacles to news entrepreneurship by providing access to comprehensive publishing tools, legal support, fiscal sponsorship and strategic planning training and guidance around product, revenue and audience development so that founders can focus on developing their journalism, building their audience and growing revenue.  Just as important is the peer community of founders supporting and sharing with one another as they each navigate their entrepreneurial journey.

“The future of local news is with small, independent startups that are responsive to their communities,” said Kara Meyberg Guzman, the Tiny News Collective’s board president. “We’re committed to strengthening news entrepreneurship in communities that have been ignored or harmed by traditional legacy media. We’re thrilled that the Knight Foundation is investing in this space.”
